Our Teen Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Trevor Kashey
How Did You Get Started?
I had really bad asthma as a small child so I was never able to participate in the general activities like soccer, basketball, football, etc. because I was never able to effectively do cardiovascular activity. Around the time I started high school I also discovered the weight room, it was here where I knew I would be able to put my bricks in the wall because I couldn't even take a lap around the field!
Also around this time my father had come back into my life and with little in common we both decided to hit the weights together. My father, along with people like Layne Norton and Marc Lobliner helped fuel my fire. I did my first contest at age 15 and won the 16 and under division.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
My contest prep workout plan was very intense (for me) and I felt it help me maintain muscle mass well (what muscle I had left) and gave me enough rest to hit it hard again.
My workout plan functioned in a 5 day cycle. This is the routine I used 6 weeks out from the contest:
I almost exclusively did the step-mill (revolving staircase) for low/medium intensity cardio and I did sprints and recumbent bicycle for my HIIT. 6 weeks out I started doing low/medium intensity cardio every day and 2 hours a day (2 sessions) on my non weight lifting days.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
My diet was based loosely off of Scivation's Diet solution that is provided as an E-book on their website. I had 5 meals per day and only had carbohydrates on days where I lifted weights. Every two weeks I'd cut out a carbohydrate meal until I was at 2 meals (Meal 1 and post workout) after that I then just cut total amounts of carbohydrates in those meals. Here is an example meal plan that was near the end of my contest prep.
On cardio days, the oats were substituted with veggies
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Athletic Xtreme's products all gave me a great edge on keeping my muscle mass while losing fat.
Whey protein of course, I don't even know if I consider it a supplement anymore though. It's such a fundamental aspect of my diet, even in the off season. Scivation's Whey has a great price, taste, and consistency.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
It is difficult. What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
Having a bodybuilding lifestyle allows me to excel in all other areas of my life. Without the time management, the discipline and the goal-oriented progress that bodybuilding provides, I would likely be lagging in other areas. "Bodybuilding should enhance your life, not take it over."
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
It's how I function. It's hard for me to make it through the day unless I feel like I have accomplished something. Even with a crappy day at work, at home, at school, whatever, you can always see improvements in the gym.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
Keep my conditioning and move up a couple weight classes over the next several years. I have also taken a liking to strongman training and competition which I am training for in the interim.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Question the purpose of everything you do:
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Layne Norton, Arnold Schwarzenegger (of course), Ava Cowan, Monica Brant, Jamie Eason, and the local freak in town NPC national competitor, Frank Nezdoba.
What Features Do You Use On Bodybuilding.com?
Lots of the calculators and I lurk on the forums.
