Getting into the United States Military Academy at West Point was my main goal. Becoming an Army officer was always my dream but I knew with the physical condition I was in I would never even get close to being admitted. I'll be blunt; I was fat, stagnant and ate horribly. I knew that I would eventually have to change my diet completely to even be considered for admission. I also felt terrible about myself and knew that something had to be done about my weight. Needless to say I never got into the United States Military Academy but I did receive a full ride to the University of San Francisco on the ROTC scholarship. At least that put me on track to continue with my dream of becoming an Army Officer.
I also didn't want to continue on avoiding water like the plague. I'll admit it, I was so self conscious that I never went to the pool or beach. Being able to take of my shirt without being self conscious really was a load off my shoulders.
My 'journey' began when my friend Domenic (now my brother in law) took a bag of popcorn out of my hands and told me to start dieting on the spot. I insisted on starting the morning after but he said that if I didn't start right then and there, I would never start. This was true. I started working out the next day. Domenic showed me how to lift properly but he wasn't much help in the way diets were concerned. Domenic was all about getting big while I just wanted to lose weight. I sought advice from Bodybuilding.com and followed a low carb diet to drop my body fat. Soon I was on my way to losing a ton of body fat. I started doing everything from buying magazines to consulting Bodybuilding.com for advice daily. I began to put my health before everything.
I also surrounded myself with 'health.' I would look at magazines and say "that's what I want to look like" and so far it's put me on the right path. My friends were also a huge help. If it weren't for my two friends Domenic Rauschkolb and Jessy Liller I wouldn't be where I am today. Just find healthy friends and hang around them! I started living my new life the fall of my senior year in high school (November 2008) and have continued to weight lift to this day. My goals are just a little different now. I focus more on putting on lean mass and improving my run times for my Army PT test. If you asked me, when I was 17, if I ever thought I would run a 12:40 2-mile, and be 178 pounds I would say no way. Now I know that I control what my body looks like and I love that feeling.

Cardio was definitely a staple when it came to me reaching my goals. But without weightlifting your body has no reason to hold onto muscle.

This isn't official but I think that the number one reason for people not reaching their goals is a lack of motivation. You need to find a motive for weight loss or muscle gain, whether it is getting into a school or just to live a longer, healthier life. I can't stress this enough you need some sort of motivation.
You should also surround yourself with people that care about their health and well-being. If you do you will find yourself pressured to eat and live healthier. Teen Transformation Of The Week Recommend this article to a friend by e-mail here!
