Why I Got Started
dot

I was a pretty normal kid growing up; I wasn't really fat, but I wasn't extremely skinny. Then one summer when I was in about fifth or sixth grade, all I did was pig out on unhealthy and fattening food and I put on a lot of weight, and I never lost it or tried to become healthy because it didn't really bother me. I always wanted to be ripped since I was a little kid, but I thought I'd just lose weight as I got older.

Then toward the end of my eighth grade year, I started getting extremely self-conscious about my weight. Life had always been pretty easy for me before that. I always got good grades, was pretty good at sports, and was pretty happy with how my life was going, until I realized I was fat.

After not making the basketball team, people making fun of me, and just losing all of my self confidence, I decided it was time for all of this to end. From June, 2008, I tried various things to lose weight such as the iwantsixpackabs.com challenge and P90x, but none of them worked because my diet was nothing close to what it should have been. I tried extremely hard to lose weight, but nothing would work, and I didn't know what I was doing wrong.

How I Did It

Then during one of the first days of summer in 2009, my mom took me to LA fitness to get me a gym membership where I met her trainer and heard about Bodybuilding.com. That was when everything started for me.

I always had the motivation, dedication, and patience to succeed in whatever I tried, but I finally got the knowledge that I lacked. He helped me with my diet, my routine, and he would answer my questions and help me all the time. I would basically just work out and do cardio for about 20 minutes after my weight training session. My routine would be in a 3-day full body split, 4-day upper/lower split, 5-day split, etc.

On the days where I wasn't lifting weights I'd do the P90x cardio workouts, which are excellent for anybody and everybody looking for good cardio, or run intervals on the treadmill. I would also rest one day a week and stretch using the P90x video on that day.

Recently I have been carb cycling, and that seems to be my most successful meal plan. I eat low carb every three days and on the fourth day, I double my carb intake and lower my fat intake. I have one or two small cheat meals a week on my high carb days and I drink about 88 - 96 ounces of water per day.

I mix up my workout routine every now and then depending on how I feel, if it's working, or if I'm getting bored of it so I don't plateau. I alternate each workout and after each weight training session I run on the Treadmill at about 6-7 mph for 15-20 minutes.

I rest between sets for about 30 - 60 seconds so the intensity is kept high.

Suggestions For Others
dot

I believe there are four keys to success with anything in life. They are Hard work, Patience, Humility, and Integrity, and they all apply to bodybuilding whether your goal is building muscle or losing weight.

You also have to realize that this isn't a fad or a crash diet, but a permanent change in your lifestyle that will only benefit you. You also have to find the reason why you won't do it and that is a huge factor. At first I used to just do it to shut up all the people who made fun of me because I was fat, but then I realized the real reason why I worked out so hard and followed my diet without cheating was because I loved doing it. I simply enjoy the lifestyle, the way I look, and the way it makes me feel.

Also another thing is always remember knowledge is your best friend. The more you learn and know, the better chances you have of being successful in whatever you are trying to do, and the best way to do this is by asking whoever knows what they are doing and by reading and reading everything you can on Bodybuilding.com. About 90% of everything I know, I have read on Bodybuilding.com.

Lastly just remember: Those who endure, conquer.
