Our Teen Bodybuilder of the Week was...
Andrew Niehoff
How Did You Get Started? I grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood where most of the kids got anything they wanted--cars, systems, etc. As a kid I kind of always wanted to have something special about me that no one else had...something to stand out. I turned to something that money couldn't buy, muscles. I read everything I could get my hands on and was addicted to FLEX and Bodybuilding.com's message board. I was lucky to grow very fast my first year of training and it was then I realized how much I loved the look and feel of having bigger muscles. What Workout Plan Worked Best For You? I still workout 4 or 5 days a week, but my schedule is so sporadic that I can't guarantee myself which days of the week those are going to be. Basically, I work everything out once a week, and I just workout the muscle that I haven't worked out recently. I always train biceps and triceps together because of the pump, and pump=growth. Every other muscle has a day to itself. I usually do 4 exercises, 2 mass and 2 isolation with reps between 6 and 12 pyramiding down. What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
Way too many people put too much emphasis on lifting when it comes to gaining muscle. Eating a lot of good food
is as, or MORE important than lifting in my opinion. Every time I have a choice
of something to eat, I always think to myself, what will be better for me to
gain muscle (Not what tastes better)? I think about this analogy I heard all
the time--think of building muscle as lighting a fire. To light a fire you
need three things: a spark, kindling, and logs. In this case, the spark is the
workout, the kindling is your post workout meal, and the logs are your overall
nutrition. Sometimes the fire burns like hell, but sometimes it starts to die
down (hitting a plateau, not seeing any gains) analyze your fire and see what is
wrong with it. Maybe you need a bigger spark to light the kindling (a more
intense workout with shocking techniques), or maybe the logs are crappy and wet,
or maybe there just aren't enough of them to keep the fire going (bad nutrition,
not enough protein). Great fires are built quickly with a strong spark, crisp
kindling, and healthy dry logs...you get where I'm going...If you workout hard
and you are still not seeing gains, eat more good food. It will happen.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains? Whey protein is pretty cheap and is good quality. I eat that a lot and I also give a lot of credit to milk. I tend to drink around a half gallon a day and it does my body good. I tried creatine once and it made me about 1/4 stronger and it puffs your muscles up which is cool because it makes you look quite a bit bigger. Why do you love Bodybuilding? I love many things about this sport, but the biggest reason is because I love doing things that require tiny improvements on a day to day basis, but if you look back, you can realize how far you have come. That is much more rewarding to me than simple pleasures like the taste of something sweet. Also, I just like the look of the muscles themselves. I find myself flexing them all the time and just looking at this baseball under my skin that didn't used to be there. As bad as it sounds, it feels good when you know some people are jealous of you. I would easily say that 95% of guys want to be big and ripped. It's cool to know that you have something that they want but can't have without years of hard work. What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans? I probably won't enter any contest that I have to wear a G string in, but I will continue bodybuilding until I have 20 inch guns and a 400 pound bench press. That should keep me busy for a while :). What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR
HANDS ON. Bodybuilding.com is a priceless wealth of knowledge at your
fingertips so take advantage of it and be a smarter lifter. Also, like Arnold
said, the key to gaining muscle is getting through the pain barrier. After the
reps really start to burn THAT is when you have to keep going. Those last 1 or
2 reps that burn like hell are going to make you grow. There are so many
people half assing themselves at the gym. You are there for a reason--make it
hurt. It's not supposed to be fun.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders? Who are my favorite bodybuilders: Arnold is an inspiration and a living legend. Not enough can be said about him. I admire Kevin Levrone's physique very much also.
