How Did You Get Started?
When I was 14 I took an interest in weightlifting because I didn't believe it
was possible to get that huge and also my friend was so impressively big.
Through the years I have gained so much knowledge on bodybuilding. In1998 I
entered my first bodybuilding contest to see how it was, It is amazing how
competition brings out the best in people, as well what you can learn from
others. I placed sixth in my first show which was the Alberta juniors and
southern Alberta championships, after that I started training a lot more
seriously and entered that competition in 1999. I placed second in the junior
category and earned a chance to compete at the Canadian nationals later on
in the year, where I then placed fifth at the Canadians in the junior men's
category. I trained and dieted very hard but feel I lost too much size
coming in at a shredded 187lbs. I was still pleased but the competition was
much tougher. I have improved a lot since then putting on 10lbs of muscle,
bulking up to 255lbs and learning so much more all the time about training
and contest preparation. What a good start to the year!!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
In the gym I train 5 days a week on bulking phases Mondays training legs,
Tuesdays chest and calves, Thursdays back abs and forearms, Fridays
shoulders and Saturdays arms and calves. In cutting phases I workout six,
even seven days a week.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
My diet is very strict pre-contest with a big emphasis on protein,
eating 350-400gms a day. I taper my carbs so late afternoon I eat none. I
make sure I eat about 50gms of quality fats like olive oil, brazil nuts, etc.
a day, which I feel have helped me retain muscle and get even more cut before
a contest. What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
My use of supplementation depends on what I can afford, but I have found the
following supplements useful for building muscle and contest preparation:
- OPTIMUM NUTRITION 100% Whey Protein for quality muscle gain
- OPTIMUM NUTRITION Creatine for strength and cell volumization
- MUSCLETECH Hydroxycut
for pre workout stimulation (especially when dieting)
- Prolab Glutamine to
protect against muscle loss while on a low carb diet
- Vanadyl Sulfate and
- Maximuscle's Maxorol for increased fullness and hardness before a
contest.
Why Do You Love Bodybuilding?
Because of the awesome challenge it gives me -
and the sense of accomplishment I get from dieting and bulking up! There is
no better feeling than after you have done a really hard workout and owning
a fit and healthy body. I also love going in front of people for the rush.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
For this year I plan on winning the
2001 Alberta Junior Championships in Lehtbridge in June, then to compete in
the Canadian Nationals Junior category in Halifax in September. In the long
term I want to pursue a bodybuilding/fitness career and to run my own gym
teaching other people how to achieve their best potential also. I don't set
myself any limits to what I can achieve!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Don't try and lift too heavy. Keep good form and feel the muscle working.
Don't try to look big lifting heavy weights, look big by having big muscles
from doing proper form!
"It's quality not quantity"
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Dan Dufresne. He is an inspirational
and helpful friend and bodybuilder who is very big. Lee Preist and Paul
Dillett because of their freaky size and the way they are so blunt with the
politics of the sport of bodybuilding.
