Should I Do Cardio On An Empty Stomach?

I had another question on bulking. You see, I want to get big (as in muscular) but still lose a little bit of my gut. Is it possible to do this? I've heard that if you do a little cardio right when you get up, before you eat anything, it's your best bet because your body will burn the excess bodyfat. Hope you can help with this one, thanks a lot!

It is very hard to gain muscle while losing fat. Your diet has to me extremely precise. At this point in your training, I would not be as concerned with losing fat while gaining size, but rather staying lean while gaining size. One way of doing this is to do cardio on the days you don't lift weights. This cardio should NOT be performed on an empty stomach before breakfast. That is one of the quickest ways to lose muscle. So yes, do cardio, but not on an empty stomach.

Now, what kind of cardio? I recommend HIIT. If you are new to cardio, I would start off slow though. Instead of jumping right into the interval training, just do the standard 30 minute session to get started. Once you feel comfortable with that, you can try HIIT. Here is what I like to do on the recombinant bike:

16 minute session. (Not counting 5 minute warm up and cool down.)

Here is how a typical session works:

(5 minute warm up)

0-1:00 minute - Establish the pace you will do using. You want an intense pace that you can stay at for 16 minutes. (Say 140 RPM)
1:00-1:15 - Go all out. (RPM closer to 200)
1:15-2:00 - Go back to 140
2:00-2:15 - Go all out
2:15-3:00 - Go back to 140
.
.
.
14:00-14:15 - Go all out
14:15-15:30 - 140 RPM
15:30-16:00 - Go all out

This is extremely intense and effective.
