Personally I find that gyms are overrated. Sure they have heaps and heaps of equipment and you can do heaps of different exercises. On the other hand crowded gyms can be annoying and can effect the intensity that you train at, particularly when supersetting. You don't want to finish one particular exercise and go to the next one finding that you can't use it because some huge ego-driven guy is sitting there sweating over the machine you want to use. Yes, gyms are great and the majority of the time they are hugely beneficial but there is an alternative. Why not train at home? You could use your basement, garage, spare room or even your own room as I used to do. Training in a 3m by 3m room can be restricting but you can still get alot out of a workout at home. Before I joined a gym I used nothing but dumbells, a barbell, a pull-up bar (attached to the door frame) and a cable resembling a large elastic band.
Using all this you can train pretty much every single muscle in your body. Here is a sample workout (not including reps and sets as they depend on the weight used):
Monday: Quads/Hams/Calves Tuesday: Cardio Wednesday: Biceps/Traps/Back Thursday: Cardio Friday: Shoulders/Triceps/Chest Saturday: Cardio Sunday: Rest *Abs are done from monday, wednesday and fridaySo as you can see, there's no need to pay hundreds of dollars for a gym if you don't have huge goals. But you must remember that you have to include the right nutritional program with it otherwise results don't come. ![]() Mixing It Up
One of the biggest problems people have when doing a fitness program or bodybuilding or whatever it may be is keeping it fun. Cardio is one of the main keys to maintaining a great physique. The main key to keeping it fun is changing things around. You can't expect to do the same program for months on end and expect to keep on wanting to do it. The best idea to keep it fun and mix it up is to try other sports. Whether it be a team game or individual sport all are beneficial. I find one of the best sports to try is cycling.
Road cycling is more practical than mountain biking but it's up to you which one you try. Cycling is an endurance sport and including building your legs up it will also help you with your intensity in the gym. Most cities and towns around the world have cycling clubs so join one and go on long weekend rides. If you are looking to include a cycling workout with your bodybuilding training check out Lance Armstrong's personal coaches weekly workouts at www.bicycling.com.
If you're sick of running for cardio go for a fast-paced walk with your dog or neighbour. It's relaxing, you can talk on the way and still get sufficient exercise. Team sports are the most enjoyable however and if you aren't already participating in a team sport then you're missing out big time! Team Sports provide a great amount of training, enjoyment and friendship. Which ever you decide to do, make sure you're always mixing it up to ensure you don't get sick and tired of doing the same cardio workout over and over again. Ben Ben C.
