Through my years of lifting, I was always fascinated by the physiques of some of the world's top competition bodybuilders. I hoped that one day I may also look like them. The only way I knew how to do this was to lift and eat, so that's what I did for over 3 years. I was big, strong, and my numbers were impressive, yet I felt like there was a missing piece and I felt fat. My body looked more like a powerlifter's then that of the competition bodybuilders I dreamed of looking like one day.
I finally realized the key missing piece was simply "diet" and "clean" foods. So from August 2008 to December 2008, I put myself on a contest like diet to rid my body of my excess body fat.
With a goal in mind to lose unneeded body fat, maintain muscle and drastically change my body's physique; I started my journey of research to find out how I could do this in a healthy yet effective manner. With the help of some of my friends, the internet, and determination I was able to find a contest prep "carb cycling" diet off a well known nutritionist's website. At first the diet looked intense, and I wasn't really sure what "carb cycling" was, nor if it would work for me.
However I figured I really didn't have anything to loose except maybe a few pounds. I created a shopping list, bought all the necessary food I needed for the week and began my journey to the new me. The diet itself took a little getting used to, but after a while it makes a lot of sense once you start seeing results. Basically you deplete your carbs for 3 days then replenish them for 3-4; as a result your body fat gets used as energy on the low carb days which burns it off.
With a combination of 45 minutes of low intensity cardio every morning and my same 5 day split lifting routine, I was able to maintain 95% of my lean body mass, keep my lifting numbers the same, and net a fat loss of around 35 pounds.

Dieting so clean is definitely not as easy as it looks; it's just something you got to want to do to see results. I recommend this diet to anyone who needs to loose even 5 pounds of fat, this diet works! The things about nutrition, calories, macronutrients, and healthy food I learned from this diet alone, I will carry with me for the rest of my life. It was definitely a life changing experience and I am glad I had a chance to experience it and get the results I so badly wanted.
From this diet template alone I have learned how to make new diets, for simply maintaining or just clean bulking. Finally, don't get discouraged!
